As time goes by, it is increasingly necessary to secure your social media. In this guide, we offer ways to make your Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts more secure.

Enabling two-factor authentication

Two-step verification serves as an additional form of account security. If an attempt to log in from an unknown device is detected, after entering your password, the service will prompt you to enter a code that is generated at that moment and will only be valid for a limited time. There are several ways to generate this code. In the settings, you can also specify devices where this verification code will not be required to log in.

Meta's Social Network Security Recommendations

The social networks Facebook, Instagram, and Horizon are owned by Meta. Meta offers a so-called Account Center, where you can find all the important settings related to your accounts on these three networks.

How to navigate to the Account Center on a PC

Facebook

  1. In the upper right corner, click Account, then Settings & Privacy.
  1. Then click on Settings.
  1. In the left panel, click on Account Center.

Instagram

  1. Go to your profile, and go to settings (marked with a gear wheel).

Facebook

  1. In the bottom menu click Menu, then in the top right click Settings (marked with a gear).
  1. Click on Account Center.

Instagram

  1. Go to your profile, and in the upper right corner, click on more (marked with three dots).
  1. Click on Settings & Privacy.
  1. Click on Account Center.

You will see a menu like this, where you have settings for your Facebook, Instagram, and Meta Horizon accounts together.

Navigate to the Password & Security section.

In this section, you have several options to secure your accounts. If you are using a PC, the Saved Logins and Security Checkup options will only show you this information for Facebook. However, the Encrypted Email Notifications option only works on PC, and only Facebook supports it.

You will usually be asked for the password for the social network whose settings you want to change.

Login Alerts

Facebook and Instagram can send you a notification if someone tries to log in to your account from an unknown device. This notification will include information about the device and its location. You can set the notification method to receive a notification on the social network, in your email, or in both at once.

Two-Step Verification

By clicking this option, you will be able to enable the use of two-factor authentication for any unknown login. Facebook and Instagram offer their own options that support the approval of two-step verification. To enable the option you have selected, just follow the on-screen instructions.

Encrypted Email Notifications option

Facebook offers the option to encrypt email messages from Facebook with your public OpenPGP key. You can then decrypt these email messages with your private OpenPGP key.

How to Turn on Two-Factor Authentication on Your PC

  1. Click on Me icon at the top of the LinkedIn homepage, and click on Settings & Privacy.
  1. Click on Login & Security, and click on Two-Factor Authentication.
  1. Click on Set.
  1. You can then choose whether to receive this code via SMS or via a verification app. Select your preferred method and click on Continue.

If you chose to have the code sent via SMS, enter your LinkedIn phone number and password. You will then receive an SMS with a verification code, which you must enter to complete the two-factor authentication setup.

If you chose a verification app, first enter your LinkedIn password.

Create a new entry for your LinkedIn account in your chosen app. Then enter the code that LinkedIn generated for you. The app will then generate verification codes for you to enter when LinkedIn requests it.

How to turn on two-factor authentication on the LinkedIn mobile app

  1. Click on your profile photo in the top left corner.

2. Next click on Settings.

3. Click on Login & Security.

4. Click on Two-Factor Authentication.

5. Click on Set.

6. Select a form of two-factor authentication and continue as in the PC instructions.
