Learn the basics of information security and educate your community

Project

2022-2024

About the project

The project began in 2021 with financial support from the SK-NIC Fund under the title "Learn the basics of information security and educate your community". The project underwent several changes after the first year of implementation, but the main goal of the project remained, namely increasing security awareness among the general public. We achieve this goal by training high school students, who then carry out activities that increase security awareness in their surroundings. At the beginning of the project, 12 high school teams were involved. Currently, 7 high school teams are participating in the project.

Activities

The project is divided into 4 activities: specialized training for high school students, raising security awareness among the general public by high school students, evaluation of activities, and activities aimed at the sustainability of the project.
1
Phase 1: Specialized Training for Students
The vocational training of students consists of both distance and face-to-face forms. High school students communicate with an assigned mentor and also selected experts from the field. In addition to mentoring and regular discussions on various topics, several lectures and workshops are held, which are usually held once a week at a predetermined time. The goal is to build a community consisting of students, teachers and lecturers. At the same time, 2 face-to-face training camps are organized, where mainly practical workshops on the topics being monitored are prepared. These workshops are expected to advance the students' technical skills, but they are also a suitable complement to the lectures.
2
Phase 2: Activities
The second part of the project is the actual raising of security awareness. Within this part, each team of students carries out at least 3 activities that have an impact on raising security awareness. 1 of these activities is a lecture for students and teachers of their own high school. Other activities are left to the choice of the team of students. However, the condition is that 1 of the undertaken activities is implemented outside the high school (e.g. for parents, primary school, seniors). The choice of place, time, and method of implementation is left to the team of students of the given high school. All materials created within the project will be published under an open license on various platforms.

Phase 3: Evaluation
The third part of the project consists of the evaluation of activities. Within the framework of these activities, individual activities of teams of high school students are evaluated. The evaluation is carried out by experts involved in the project, as well as invited external experts. The best teams will be evaluated and the best activity increasing security awareness will also be selected. Within this part, an individual competition is implemented - the so-called Capture the flag competition, in which individuals compete in solving interesting tasks. The aim of this activity is to increase students' interest in the field of information security.
4
Phase 4: Sustainability
The last part of the project consists of activities aimed at the sustainability of the project. As part of this phase, CyberSecurityDay is held, which is attended by high school students (original team members as well as new students). The last activity, which deepens the knowledge of students, but also shares knowledge and creates a community, is a weekend concentration - Autumn School. This concentration consists of several lectures and workshops and is intended for 20 high school students involved in the project and 10 teachers.

Project support

The budget for the Summer School of Cybercrime covers the costs of student and lecturer accommodation, meals, and materials. We are grateful to our partners for their generous support, which helps us to make this program possible.
